Under $5,000, a cold plunge comes with its own chiller. No more bags of ice: the chiller holds the water at a set temperature, and most can also heat it. The trade offs in this band are the tub material, how cold the chiller goes, and how much the whole thing weighs once it is full.
This roundup scores six chiller systems sold on Amazon on what each listing states. Listings were collected 3 October 2026.
This article is informational and is not medical advice. Cold water causes a cold shock response: a gasp and a rapid rise in heart rate and blood pressure. Never plunge alone or after drinking, and get out if you feel numb, confused or dizzy. Speak to a doctor first if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, Raynaud’s, or are pregnant. How much each one weighs full
Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon. We added that to each tub’s stated empty weight, using the capacity each listing states. Add your own weight on top.
| Plunge | Capacity stated | Water weight | Empty weight | Total filled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AURGOD Cedar 1HP | 500 L (132 gal) | About 1,100 lb | 400 lb | About 1,500 lb |
| WOODBRIDGE 54in | 500 L (132 gal) | About 1,100 lb | 259 lb | About 1,360 lb |
| Smartmak Cedar Oval | “500 gal”, likely 500 L | About 1,100 lb if 500 L | 397 lb | About 1,500 lb |
| ICEGALAX V5 | 300 L (79 gal) | About 660 lb | 245 lb | About 905 lb |
| Brooklyn Plunge Oval Pro | Not stated | Not known | Not stated | Not known |
| RECOVEREX P2 | 88 gal | About 730 lb | Not stated | Over 730 lb |
Capacity figures are the brand’s, and most people fill a tub below the brim, so real weight is usually lower. Still, the cedar tubs can approach 1,500 pounds on a footprint of a few square feet. On an upper floor or an older deck, ask a contractor before you fill one. On a ground level concrete slab, weight is less of a worry.
Power and wiring
Three of the six state 110 or 120 volts. The other three give no voltage in the listing data, so confirm it with the seller before you order. Run the chiller from a GFCI protected outlet, keep the cord and plug out of splash range, and do not use an extension cord unless the manual allows it. If the nearest outlet shares a circuit with a freezer or a space heater, ask an electrician about a dedicated circuit.
What 19 listings state
We read 19 chiller system listings in the under $5,000 range. Only 5 state a warranty term, 4 name an electrical safety standard, and 7 state a chiller size in horsepower. Six state a voltage.
Watt figures in this category are confusing. Some brands give cooling capacity, which is how much heat the chiller removes, and some give power draw. Listings rarely say which, so we did not estimate running cost from them.
Score notes
The Chill Score weighs performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. Here, performance covers the lowest stated temperature, chiller size, any stated cooling rate, and filtration. AURGOD and Smartmak get partial safety credit for describing the chiller as ETL certified without a file number. WOODBRIDGE gets a little for a UL approved plug.
| Product | Chill Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AURGOD Cedar 1HP | 9.5 | 29 | 21 | 20 | 5 | 0 |
| WOODBRIDGE 54in 1.3HP | 9.5 | 29 | 20 | 19 | 2 | 2 |
| Smartmak Cedar Oval | 9.5 | 28 | 21 | 19 | 5 | 0 |
| ICEGALAX V5 | 9.5 | 28 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 2 |
| Brooklyn Plunge Oval Pro | 9.4 | 27 | 20 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| RECOVEREX P2 88-Gallon | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 22 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
AURGOD and WOODBRIDGE tie on top. AURGOD states its cool down time and an ETL claim; WOODBRIDGE states a cooling rate and a warranty. RECOVEREX has the lowest price.
Who should not buy one
If you will only plunge once or twice a week, a chiller may not pay for itself over ice. See our inflatable ice baths.
If anyone in the house is a small child, keep the lid on and locked when the tub is not in use. A full tub is a drowning risk.
Common questions
How long does a chiller take to cool the water?
Only two listings say. AURGOD states three to four hours to reach 40°F. WOODBRIDGE states up to 9°F per hour. Starting with cold tap water shortens it.
Wood, acrylic or canvas?
Acrylic is easiest to clean. Cedar looks good but needs more care. Canvas is cheapest and lightest but softer.
Do I need 240 volts?
AURGOD, WOODBRIDGE and Brooklyn Plunge state 110 or 120 volts. The others do not say, so ask the seller, and use a GFCI protected outlet either way.
