Speak to a clinician first
Heat exposure and cold water immersion place real stress on the cardiovascular system. Talk to your doctor before using a sauna, cold plunge, ice bath, or red light device if any of the following apply to you:
- You have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, or a history of stroke or arrhythmia
- You are pregnant or may be pregnant
- You have diabetes, a circulatory condition, or reduced sensation in your hands or feet
- You have epilepsy or a seizure disorder
- You take medication that affects blood pressure, heart rate, thermoregulation, or photosensitivity
- You have an implanted medical device
- You are recovering from surgery or an acute injury
This list is not exhaustive. If you are unsure, ask.
Specific cautions
Sauna
Overheating and dehydration are real risks. Do not use a sauna after drinking alcohol or while taking a substance that impairs your judgment of heat. Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseated, or unwell. Do not leave children unattended near one.
Cold plunge and ice baths
Sudden cold water immersion triggers a gasp reflex and a sharp rise in heart rate and blood pressure. This is dangerous for some people and can cause drowning even in shallow water. Never plunge alone. Be aware that core temperature continues to fall after you get out, an effect known as afterdrop, and warm up gradually.
Red light therapy
Do not look directly into an illuminated array, and use the eye protection the manufacturer supplies. Take particular care if you have a photosensitive condition or take a medication that increases light sensitivity.
Percussion and compression devices
Do not use a massage gun on your neck, spine, head, or over major arteries, and do not use one on an acute injury, an open wound, a fracture, a blood clot, or an area of numbness. Stop if it hurts.
On health claims
Marketing in this category frequently claims that a device detoxifies the body, burns calories, raises testosterone, boosts immunity, or reduces inflammation. Chillveda does not make those claims and does not endorse them when a brand makes them.
Where we refer to published research, we say what the research found and what its limits are. Research on a category of device is not a promise about a specific product, and it is not a promise about you.
Regulatory status
Some red light therapy devices hold FDA 510(k) clearance for specific indications. Clearance is not the same as approval, and it applies only to the indication the device was cleared for. Where we mention it, we name that indication. A device without clearance is not a medical device, whatever its marketing suggests.
Electrical and installation safety
Saunas, chillers, and heaters draw significant current. Many require a dedicated circuit and ground fault protection. Have installation work done by a licensed electrician, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and look for a UL, ETL, or CSA listing on anything that plugs into mains power.
