Portable and Steam Saunas: a quick buyer's checklist
- Steam generator capacity. The maker states the generator's size or wattage, which sets how fast the tent warms and how long it runs.
- Warm-up time. Regard quoted warm-up times as brand claims, and check the room conditions the maker assumes.
- Footprint and chair. Compare the folded size, the seated interior and the chair height with your space.
- Outlet and power draw. These units plug into a standard outlet, so check the rated wattage against the circuit you will use.
- Materials and cleaning. Look for what the cover is made of and how the maker says to dry and store it.
- Seat, hose and fittings. Confirm which parts ship in the box and which, like a chair or hose, you must buy separately.
Portable steam units are easy to store but still produce real heat, so follow the manufacturer's directions and our medical disclaimer. Because these units are inexpensive next to a cabin, it is tempting to skip the details. Do not skip the cover material and the power rating, since they decide how long the unit lasts and whether it is safe on the outlet you plan to use.
