A steam room generator turns a sealed shower into a steam room. It is a boiler that sits in a vanity, closet or nearby space and pipes steam to a head in the shower. This is not a plug in product: it needs a 240 volt circuit, a water line and a drain, and the shower itself must be built for steam. If you want steam with no install, see our portable steam saunas.
This roundup scores five generators sold on Amazon on what each listing states. Listings were collected 3 October 2026.
This article is informational and is not medical advice. Do not use a steam room if you are pregnant, have been drinking alcohol, or feel unwell. Speak to a doctor first if you have a heart condition, blood pressure problems or a breathing condition. Keep sessions short, drink water, and keep skin away from the steam head. The circuit each one needs
Current at 240 volts is power divided by voltage. We calculated it from each listing’s stated kW. It is the draw while heating, not the breaker size; your electrician sizes the breaker and wire to code.
| Generator | Power | Draw at 240V | Room size stated | Auto drain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta SimpleSteam 7.5kW | 7.5 kW | About 31 A | Not stated | Sold separately |
| VEVOR 12kW | 12 kW | About 50 A | Up to 355 cu ft | Yes |
| VEVOR DO-90 9kW | 9 kW | About 38 A | 212 to 318 cu ft | Yes |
| CGOLDENWALL 6kW | 6 kW | About 25 A (40 A stated) | Up to 212 cu ft | Yes |
| SteamSpa Executive 9kW | 9 kW | About 38 A | Not stated | Yes |
To size a generator, multiply the inside length, width and height of your shower in feet to get cubic feet, then pick a unit whose stated range covers it. Tile, stone and glass take more steam than acrylic, and a high ceiling adds volume, so ask the manufacturer when you are near the top of a range. Installation needs a licensed electrician, and in most places a plumber and a permit as well.
What each one costs to run
At full rated power, using 18.34 cents per kWh, the US residential average for June 2026 from the Energy Information Administration. A generator runs flat out to build steam, then cycles to hold temperature, so a real session costs less.
| Product | Rated power | Per one hour | Per month, 4 sessions a week |
|---|---|---|---|
| VEVOR 12kW | 12,000 W | $2.20 | $38.15 |
| SteamSpa Executive 9kW | 9,000 W | $1.65 | $28.61 |
| VEVOR DO-90 9kW | 9,000 W | $1.65 | $28.61 |
| Delta SimpleSteam 7.5kW | 7,500 W | $1.38 | $23.84 |
| CGOLDENWALL 6kW | 6,000 W | $1.10 | $19.07 |
The table assumes an hour at full power. Most steam sessions are shorter and the heater cycles once the room is up to temperature, so real costs are lower. The bigger cost is the install: a new 240 volt circuit, plumbing and a vapor tight enclosure.
What 20 listings state
We read 20 generator listings. Nineteen state a kW rating, but only 5 state the room size it suits and 2 state the current it draws. Six state a warranty term, and 3 mention a UL or CSA listing, often for a part rather than the whole unit.
Score notes
The Chill Score weighs performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. Here, performance covers stated room sizing, controls, auto drain and safety cutoffs. VEVOR’s 12 kW gets a little safety credit for UL certified heating elements; no other pick names a listing.
| Product | Chill Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta SimpleSteam 7.5kW | 9.5 | 27 | 22 | 19 | 0 | 4 |
| VEVOR 12kW | 9.5 | 29 | 20 | 21 | 2 | 0 |
| VEVOR DO-90 9kW | 9.5 | 29 | 20 | 22 | 0 | 0 |
| CGOLDENWALL 6kW | 9.5 | 29 | 20 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| SteamSpa Executive 9kW | 9.4 | 29 | 21 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
Delta scores highest on its lifetime warranty and build, but you pay more and buy the drain separately. VEVOR’s 12 kW states the most about sizing and protection for the money.
Who should not buy one
If your shower has an open top, a gap above the glass, or a ceiling that is not sealed, it is not a steam room yet. Steam will escape and moisture can damage the room around it.
If your panel cannot take another 30 to 50 amp circuit, price a panel upgrade first, or choose a sauna that runs on less.
Common questions
What size steam generator do I need?
Work out the cubic feet of the shower, then use the range each brand states. Of our picks, VEVOR and CGOLDENWALL state ranges; ask Delta and SteamSpa for theirs.
Do I need auto drain?
It empties the tank after each use, which reduces scale. Four of our five include it; Delta sells it separately.
Can I install it myself?
The electrical work needs a licensed electrician, and most areas require a permit. Check local rules before you buy.
