A sauna bucket and ladle are how you make steam in a traditional sauna: you scoop water and pour it on the hot stones of the heater. It is the cheapest accessory in a sauna, but the size of the ladle and the material of the bucket matter more than the listings suggest.
This roundup scores six sets sold on Amazon on what each listing states. Listings were collected 3 October 2026.

Which saunas need one
Only saunas with a stone heater, wood fired or electric. Never pour water on an infrared sauna’s panels or on an electric heater that has no stones. If your heater has stones, check its manual first, since some brands limit what you can pour, such as no salt water or undiluted oils. For heaters, see our best sauna heaters, and for the two types, infrared vs traditional sauna.
How many scoops per bucket
We divided each bucket’s stated capacity by its stated ladle size. A small ladle gives you more control over each burst of steam.
| Set | Material | Bucket | Ladle | Scoops per full bucket |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSE Cedar 4L | Red cedar | 4 L | About 100 ml | About 40 |
| Northwood Cedar 4L | Red cedar | 4 L | 100 ml | About 40 |
| bayisam Pine 4L | Pine | 4 L | 100 ml | About 40 |
| RUVARO Cedar 4L | Red cedar | 4 L | Not stated | Not known |
| Nature Hytte Cedar 4L | Red cedar | 4 L | Not stated | Not known |
| SAUNOM Aluminum | Aluminum | About 4.9 L | About 400 ml | About 12 |
A 100 ml ladle is the common size. Start with one scoop, wait for the steam to settle, and add more if you want it. Keep your face back when you pour: the first burst of steam is the hottest.
What 20 listings state
We read 20 bucket and ladle listings. Most wooden buckets are 4 liters with a plastic liner. Only a handful state the ladle volume, and a few aluminum listings give two different capacities on the same page.
Score notes
The Chill Score weighs performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. Here, performance covers stated capacity, ladle size and liner. Safety certifications do not apply to a bucket, and no listing states a warranty, so all score zero on both.
| Product | Chill Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSE Cedar 4L | 9.4 | 28 | 21 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| Northwood Cedar 4L | 9.4 | 28 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| bayisam Pine 4L | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 22 | 0 | 0 |
| RUVARO Cedar 4L | 9.4 | 27 | 20 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| Nature Hytte Cedar 4L | 9.4 | 27 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| SAUNOM Aluminum | 9.4 | 26 | 21 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
HSE scores highest, one point ahead of Northwood: both state the ladle size, and both use red cedar with a liner. bayisam is the value pick if pine is fine for you.
Who should not buy one
If you have an infrared sauna, you do not need a bucket. Water on infrared panels is an electrical hazard.
If you will not empty and dry a wooden bucket after each session, choose aluminum. A wooden bucket left full will stain, warp or grow mold.
Common questions
Why do wooden buckets have a plastic liner?
It keeps water off the wood so the bucket does not swell, crack or leak. Lift it out to clean it.
Cedar or pine?
Cedar resists moisture better and smells stronger. Pine is cheaper. Both need drying after use.
Can I add essential oils?
Only if your heater manual allows it, and only diluted in the water. Undiluted oil on hot stones is a fire risk.
