Laser combs are handheld devices you pass slowly over the scalp while the teeth part the hair. Most use red light around 650 nm and are sold for thinning hair from hereditary hair loss. They are medical devices, and the claims on many listings go further than the evidence.
This roundup scores six combs sold on Amazon on what each listing states. Listings were collected 5 October 2026.

What FDA clearance means here
Some laser combs have FDA 510(k) clearance for androgenetic alopecia in people with specific hair loss patterns and lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I to IV). Clearance means the FDA found a device substantially equivalent to one already on the market. It is not FDA approval and it does not guarantee results for you. Eleven of the 20 listings we read say FDA cleared, and none gives a 510(k) number. Ask the seller for it and check it in the FDA database. Our guide to red light FDA clearance shows how.
What each listing discloses
| Comb | Wavelength | Lasers | K number | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HairMax Ultima 9 | Not stated | 9 | No | 1 year |
| HairMax Ultima 12 | Not stated | 12 | No | 1 year |
| PUPCA Laser Comb | Not stated | Not stated | No | Not stated |
| HAUBAT Laser Comb | 650 nm | Not stated | No | Not stated |
| NBWTYA Laser Comb | 650 to 655 nm | Not stated | No | Not stated |
| Apbier Hair Comb | 630 to 660 nm | Not stated | No | 180 day guarantee |
Only nine of 20 listings state a wavelength and three state a warranty. Several cheaper results in our search were electric scalp massagers or oil applicators with a few colored LEDs, sold with hair growth wording. We left them out.
Using a comb safely
- Do not point a laser comb at your eyes or anyone else’s. Keep it on the scalp.
- Follow the session length and schedule in the manual. More is not better.
- Results, if any, take months. HairMax quotes its own figures after six months of use.
- Stop and see a doctor if the scalp becomes irritated.
Score notes
The Chill Score weighs performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. Here, performance covers what each listing discloses about lasers, wavelength and indication. We do not score hair growth claims. No comb states a UL or ETL listing, so safety is zero for all.
| Product | Chill Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HairMax Ultima 9 | 9.5 | 29 | 21 | 18 | 0 | 2 |
| HairMax Ultima 12 | 9.5 | 30 | 21 | 16 | 0 | 2 |
| PUPCA Laser Comb | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
| HAUBAT Laser Comb | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| NBWTYA Laser Comb | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
| Apbier Hair Comb | 9.4 | 26 | 19 | 20 | 0 | 1 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
The two HairMax combs lead on warranty. HAUBAT has the best average among the cheaper combs. Apbier is the low cost choice with a money back guarantee.
Who should not buy these
If you have not had your hair loss diagnosed, start with a doctor. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or comes with scalp pain, a comb is the wrong tool. If you have darker skin (Fitzpatrick V or VI), cleared indications usually exclude you. And if you would rather not hold a device for each session, a red light cap is hands free.
For background, see red light wavelengths explained.
Common questions
Comb or cap?
A comb is cheaper but you move it by hand for each session. A cap covers the whole scalp at once and costs more.
Do laser combs work?
We do not assess medical results, and the claims on these listings are the brands’ own. Ask a dermatologist whether a device suits your type of hair loss.
