Sauna stones sit on the heater, store its heat and turn water into steam when you pour it on. Over time they crack and crumble, and broken pieces block air flow around the elements, so most heater makers tell you to check and replace them regularly.
This roundup scores six boxes of stones sold on Amazon on what each listing states. Listings were collected 4 October 2026.

Start with your heater manual
Your heater manual is the rule here, not any listing. It usually states the stone type and size range, the weight the heater holds, and how loosely to stack them. Stones that are too small or packed too tightly restrict air flow and can make the elements run hot, and the wrong stones may affect your heater warranty. Infrared cabins do not use stones at all.
Stone type, size and origin
| Box | Stone | Size stated | Weight | Origin stated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harvia Olivine 44lb | Olivine diabase | 5 to 10 cm | 44 lb | Finland |
| Sauna Place 45lb | Olivine | Not stated | 45 lb | Finland |
| Northwood Diabase | Diabase | 2 to 4 in | 45 lb | Germany |
| SAUNOM Vulcanite | Vulcanite | Not stated | 33 lb | Not stated |
| bayisam Diabase 19lb | Diabase | Not stated | 19 lb | Not stated |
| WILLOWYBE Volcanic | Volcanic | Not stated | About 35 lb | Not stated |
Only two listings state a stone size, and both give the 5 to 10 cm range common for home heaters. Compare the box weight with the stone capacity in your heater manual; a large heater can need more than one box. We read 18 listings: none states a warranty, and one claims the stones supply minerals to your body, which we left out.
Loading and replacing stones
- Rinse new stones to remove dust before loading, unless the maker says otherwise.
- Put larger stones at the bottom and stack loosely so air can pass between them. Do not let stones touch or bend the elements.
- Check them at least once a year, and more often with heavy use. Remove cracked or crumbling stones and any grit at the bottom.
- Use only clean water on the stones, unless your heater manual allows additives.
Score notes
The Chill Score weighs performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. Here, performance covers stated stone type, size and origin. Safety certifications do not apply, and no listing states a warranty, so all score zero on both.
| Product | Chill Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harvia Olivine 44lb | 9.5 | 30 | 22 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
| Sauna Place 45lb | 9.5 | 29 | 21 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| Northwood Diabase | 9.4 | 29 | 20 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
| SAUNOM Vulcanite | 9.4 | 27 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| bayisam Diabase 19lb | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| WILLOWYBE Volcanic | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
Harvia leads on stating type, size and origin from a heater maker. Northwood states size and origin for diabase.
Who should not buy these
If you own an infrared sauna, you need no stones. If your heater maker sells its own stones, buying those is the safest way to stay within the manual. And if your stones are whole and clean, there is no need to replace them yet.
For your heater, see sauna heaters and wood-burning sauna stoves. To pour water, see sauna buckets and ladles.
Common questions
How often should I replace sauna stones?
Follow your heater manual. Many recommend checking yearly and replacing broken stones, with a full change after heavy use.
Can I use river rocks or landscape stones?
No. Unknown stones can crack or burst when heated and wet. Use stones sold for sauna heaters.
Olivine, diabase or volcanic?
All three are sold for saunas. Choose the type your heater maker recommends.
