Cold Plunge Ice Bath

Side by side Choose an ice bath if Choose a cold plunge if

Cold plunge vs ice bath comes down to how the water gets cold. An ice bath is a tub you fill with tap water and chill with ice each time. A cold plunge is a tub with a chiller, and usually a filter, that holds the water at a set temperature every day. The ice bath is cheap to start and a chore to keep up. The cold plunge costs far more up front and needs power and maintenance, but it is ready when you are.

This comparison covers cost, setup, temperature control, upkeep and safety, with the gear for each route. It does not compare health effects, because the cold water does not know how it got cold. Listings were collected 8 October 2026.

This article is informational and is not medical advice. Cold water triggers a gasp reflex and fast breathing, and your core temperature keeps falling after you get out (afterdrop). Never plunge alone, keep your head above water, and ask a clinician first if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, or are pregnant. How much ice an ice bath really needs

This is the number most ice bath advice skips, so here is the arithmetic. Water weighs about 8.34 lb per gallon, and it takes 1 BTU to change 1 lb of water by 1 F. Each pound of ice absorbs about 144 BTU as it melts, plus about 18 BTU more warming from 32 F to 50 F, so roughly 162 BTU per pound.

Tub of 85 gallons, cooled to 50 F Heat to remove Ice needed, in theory
Starting at 60 F About 7,100 BTU About 44 lb
Starting at 70 F About 14,200 BTU About 88 lb

These are best case figures. Real tubs gain heat from the air, the ground and your body, so plan on more. One full day of output from a countertop ice maker rated at 44 lb, or almost five batches from a 9.4 lb set of block molds, covers the 60 F case once. Cold tap water in winter helps a lot, and warm summer tap water makes ice baths hard work.

For comparison, the countertop ice maker below is rated at 135 W. Run for a full day, that is about 3.2 kWh, or about 59 cents at 18.34 cents per kWh, the US residential average for June 2026 from the Energy Information Administration. Chiller running costs depend on size, insulation and room temperature, and our cold plunge running cost guide works through them.

Cost, space and power

An ice bath tub can be a folding tub or a stock tank. The cost is the tub plus ice. See our ice baths under $200 for tubs.

A cold plunge is a tub plus a chiller, a pump and filtration, either bought as one unit or built from parts. The chiller needs a grounded, GFCI protected outlet, good airflow, and a spot where water cannot reach the electrics. Our cold plunge tubs roundup covers complete units, and cold plunge chillers covers chillers for a tub you already have.

Upkeep

Ice bath water is cheap to replace, so most people drain it often. The Cold Pod listing suggests a change every four weeks with a stabilizer or UV purifier. Every session adds sweat and dirt, so shorter is better.

A cold plunge keeps the same water for weeks, which means filter cleaning, sanitizer and regular water checks. Our cold plunge water care guide covers the routine.

Gear for each route

These are scored on the Chill Score: performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. None states a UL or ETL listing, so all score 0 for safety.

Product Chill Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
EUHOMY 44 lb Ice Maker 9.4 28 20 21 0 0
The Cold Pod 88 gal 9.4 27 19 22 0 0
XANGNIER Ice Molds 9.4 26 20 24 0 0
Active Aqua 1/2 HP 9.4 27 20 15 0 2

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

Choose an ice bath if

  • You plunge a few times a week or less.
  • You rent, move often, or have no spot for a permanent tub.
  • You want to find out whether you like cold water before spending on a chiller.
  • Your tap water is already cold for much of the year.

Choose a cold plunge if

  • You plunge most days and want the same temperature every time.
  • You can give it a permanent spot with a GFCI outlet and airflow.
  • You will keep up with filters and sanitizer.
  • Your summers make ice baths impractical.

Common questions

Is a cold plunge the same as an ice bath?

Both are cold water immersion. An ice bath is chilled with ice for each session, while a cold plunge uses a chiller to hold a set temperature. The difference is equipment, cost and convenience.

Is an ice bath colder than a cold plunge?

Not necessarily. A chiller can hold a steady low temperature, while an ice bath starts cold and warms as the ice melts. With enough ice, an ice bath can reach a similar temperature for a short time.

How much ice do I need for an ice bath?

By our arithmetic, cooling 85 gallons from 60 F to 50 F takes about 44 lb of ice in theory, and from 70 F about 88 lb, before any heat gain. Real tubs need more.

Can I add a chiller to an ice bath tub?

Often, yes, if the tub can take the plumbing fittings and you add a pump and filter. Check the chiller’s stated tub size and make sure the electrical setup is safe near water.

Which is safer, a cold plunge or an ice bath?

The cold water risks are the same: cold shock, afterdrop and drowning if you faint. A cold plunge adds an electrical appliance near water, so it needs a GFCI outlet and proper installation.
