A barrel sauna is a round, outdoor cabin made of staves held by steel bands. The shape has less air to heat than a square cabin of the same footprint and sheds rain well, which is why it is popular for backyards.
This roundup scores the four barrel kits on Amazon that are not already in our other outdoor roundups, on what each listing states: heater and safety listing, wood, roof and warranty. Listings were collected 2 October 2026.

What each barrel needs before it arrives
| Barrel | Heat source | Approximate draw at 240V | Safety listing stated | Roof |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| INFRADELUX 4-Person | 6 kW electric | 25 A | ETL, heater only | Not stated |
| Benovo 2-Person | 4.5 kW electric | 19 A | ETL, stove only | Asphalt |
| SunSwell 4-6 Person | 6 kW electric | 25 A | None | Tarpaulin |
| ZONEMEL Wood-Fired | Wood stove | None | None | Asphalt shingle |
Every electric barrel here is hardwired on 220V to 240V. Outdoors, the run usually goes underground or in conduit from your panel, with a disconnect near the sauna and GFCI protection where code requires it. That work often costs as much as a cheap heater, so get a quote first. Our sauna electrical guide explains the parts.
All four need a level base, such as a concrete pad, pavers or a timber deck, and the heavy kits arrive by freight. Two barrels state their weight: 675 lb and 800 lb.
What the listings state
Two state an ETL certified heater. One states a warranty term. None states a safety listing for the sauna as a whole.
What each one costs to run
At full power, using 18.34 cents per kWh, the US residential average for June 2026 from the Energy Information Administration. Outdoors in cold weather a barrel takes longer to warm up, so budget toward the top of this range in winter.
| Product | Rated power | Per one hour | Per month, 4 sessions a week |
|---|---|---|---|
| INFRADELUX 4-Person | 6,000 W | $1.10 | $19.07 |
| SunSwell 4-6 Person | 6,000 W | $1.10 | $19.07 |
| Benovo 2-Person | 4,500 W | 83 cents | $14.31 |
The monthly column assumes four one hour sessions a week at full power. See our running cost guide to use your own rate. The wood fired ZONEMEL has no electric running cost, only firewood.
Score notes
The Chill Score weighs performance 35, build 25, value 25, safety certifications 10 where it applies and warranty 5. A stated ETL or UL listing for the heater alone earns partial safety credit, and a listing for the whole sauna would earn the full 10. Build favors cedar and a solid roof.
| Product | Chill Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| INFRADELUX 4-Person | 9.6 | 30 | 21 | 19 | 5 | 1 |
| Benovo 2-Person | 9.5 | 27 | 20 | 18 | 5 | 0 |
| SunSwell 4-6 Person | 9.4 | 28 | 16 | 20 | 0 | 2 |
| ZONEMEL Wood-Fired | 9.4 | 28 | 22 | 15 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
The two barrels with a stated ETL heater take the top two places. SunSwell gains on warranty but loses on build detail. The ZONEMEL has the best materials but no listing, no warranty and the highest price.
Who should not buy one
If you cannot run a 240V circuit to the yard, an electric barrel is not practical. Consider the wood fired model, if local rules allow it, or an indoor cabin from our saunas under $2,000.
If you are in a deed restricted community or a high fire risk area, check rules on outdoor structures and wood stoves before you buy.
If you want a sauna this winter, allow time for the pad, the electrician and freight delivery.
Common questions
Is a barrel sauna better than a square cabin?
A barrel has less interior volume for the same footprint, so it can heat faster, and the curved roof sheds water. A square cabin has more usable headroom and bench space.
Does a barrel sauna need a roof cover?
Bare staves weather and can leak at the top. Shingles or a fitted cover protect them. Two of these listings state an asphalt roof, one uses a tarp, and one does not say.
What does ETL certified heater mean?
It means the listing says the heater has been certified under the ETL mark, run by an independent safety certification lab. It does not cover the barrel, the wiring or the installation.
